Founded in 1963 by the Church of England as a teacher training college in Lancaster, St Martin's College has expanded rapidly over the past 40 years. From just 89 students when it first opened its doors, it now boasts more than 10,000.
It is based on three campuses, in Lancaster, Carlisle and Ambleside in the Lake District, but it also has sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Whitehaven and east London.
The college is perhaps best known for its courses in the education and health sectors. Half of the students studying at the college, which offers degrees awarded by Lancaster University, are on teaching courses. Some 30% study health-related subjects, including radiography, imaging sciences and the more traditional nursing degrees, while the remaining 20% pick arts and humanities subjects, which could be anything from adventure recreation management to Christian ministry and Victorian culture.
Accommodation is guaranteed for all first-years who make St Martin's their first choice, although there is likely to be college housing available even if you don't.
The student union offers a range of sports and social societies and the usual campus bars and entertainment. Off campus, Lancaster and Carlisle provide plenty in the way of pubs and clubs. You may find the nightlife in Ambleside a little tame in comparison, but having the Lake District on your doorstep should go someway to compensate.
