APU is based at two main campuses, in Cambridge and Chelmsford. It is a large university of over 28,000 students, compared with 7,000 in 1992. The only ex-polytechnic to have held on to the title, it remains fiercely committed to widening access. Some 95% of APU students come from state schools and 70% are mature, often juggling study and family commitments; 58% study part-time. A varied social programme is on offer at both campuses and students in Cambridge enjoy one of the most student-orientated cities in the UK.
