The Concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was broadcast in a virtual Concert Hall with a virtual representation (or Avatar) of the conductor Vasily Petrenko and Kenneth Hesketh (composer) as avatars answering questions in the Foyer Bar following the performance . 'Second Lifers' had been clamouring for one of the limited tickets for the concert and real life media around the globe covered the story.
The whole event was part of the Orchestra's project to bring classical music to new audiences.
Victoria Grimbly works for the Orchestra on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Bangor University, which is also supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (ARHC). The KTP enables the Orchestra to extend and improve their media presence as one means of reaching new audiences. The KTP enables the Orchestra to employ Victoria as a KTP Associate. In that role she can access expertise within Bangor University to assist with developing the project.
"The Second Life Concert was one strand of a four stage new media development project. I and a Marketing colleague initiated the idea, which the Orchestra has embraced with enthusiasm. It's been a fast moving project which has developed over two months," explains Victoria
"I have experience of web management and really wanted to break into new media, added to which working in the arts is really exciting. This KTP Associateship has enabled me to achieve my goals and I really hope that at the end of the project I will be able to stay with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra- they are as committed to staying at the cutting edge of this technology as I am to being there," said Victoria Grimbly.
"The KTP Programme has enabled us to develop this media project and has made resources and expertise available to us, which we otherwise would not have been able to access or resource," explained Millicent Jones, Communications and Marketing Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
"This Concert has certainly brought us to a new audience. The wider project has also enabled us to develop our internet presence and move in exciting new directions..."
The KTP is with Bangor University's Music Department, builds on a historic relationship between the University and the Royal Philharmonic, which goes back as far as 1913, when the Head of the University's Music Department, Harry Evans, was also one of the Orchestra's Conductors.
Wyn Thomas, lead academic from Bangor's School of Music said "It is a fantastic pleasure to be working with one of Liverpool's heavyweight cultural icons in the build up the European City of Culture celebrations in 2008 and develop, and we are delighted that we able to develop our relationship through such an exciting and innovative project."
