In an innovative joint venture, 22-year-old Chris will be working equally with the University and the rugby league club, with the aim of getting local people interested in sport while breaking down some of the barriers that can stop youngsters going on to university.
Chris, from Dukinfield, said: "I'm really excited about this new role as Sports Science and Partnership Manager. I'll be working with the University and Salford City Reds to identify how they can work in partnership together.
"For example, not many people know about the amazing research taking place in the University's hi-tech exercise and health facilities, which could help the Salford City players."
After graduating in Sports Science from Salford this summer, Chris was looking for some experience working with elite athletes. And he feels that he's found it with the new role.
"When I heard about this job, I jumped at the chance," he said. "It's come at a great time with the amazing plans for the new stadium in the pipeline. But I also realise I've got quite a challenge on my hands, with the two worlds of professors and sportsmen working together!"
Chris, who will be based at Pendleton College, used to play for the England under-16s rugby union team. But he said he was looking forward to changing his allegiance to rugby league.
"Salford City Reds are a great side and have been coaching the University team for several years now," he said. "I just hope they're kind to me - I am a rugby union lad after all!
"It's my aim to use the University's expertise to really strengthen the Reds and I hope I'll be able to play a part in taking Salford City Reds to their rightful place in rugby league's top division."
To celebrate this innovative collaboration between the two Salford institutions, the University will be associate match sponsor of the Salford City Reds' final game of the season against Warrington this Friday evening.
