The ‘Mathematics Development Programme for Teachers’ was piloted this summer and is already proving popular. It is addressing issues such as making teaching more effective through a deeper understanding of mathematics and how this can help improve results for schools and colleges. The course is for those who have, at some time, undertaken initial teacher training in a subject other than Mathematics or for staff who are new to this subject area. Programme Co-ordinator Keith Munnings said: “Twelve teachers from schools and colleges across the West Midlands attended the intensive start in June and their experience has been extraordinary. “One participant enrolled specifically to ‘switch on my student’s imagination and interest in Mathematics’; another saw it as an opportunity to, after 30 years in teaching, ‘make me really think about what I do and how I can do it better’.” He said all of the participants wanted to enhance their subject knowledge in order to deepen their understanding of Mathematics and to help enable children to become better learners in the subject. Mr Munnings added: “A great deal of interest is being taken in this new Continued Professional Development programme for Mathematics teachers; involving a substantial 30 day programme held on the Walsall campus and 10 days follow-up in school.” The programme has Master’s level accreditation and work can be submitted towards a postgraduate certificate in Teaching of Mathematics which will count one-third towards a Master’s level qualification. There are places still available on the programme.
