Developed by the university’s Faculty of Arts through Innovate, its Centre for Creative Industries based at the Tamar Science Park, the software is the first of its kind and dramatically improves on the quality of existing 3D environment software, commonly associated with computer gaming.
The software – known as the Panoramic Collections Viewer – creates a stunning virtual environment in spherical form into which museum archivists can drag and drop hi resolution images of artefacts. It can be used for a variety of applications including archiving and collaborative online exhibitions between museums around the world.
Martin Woolner, Associate Dean for Innovation in the Faculty of Arts, said: “The government is putting increasing pressure on the museum and heritage sector as 80 per cent of collections are never put on display to the British public.
“We believe there is no other system like this in the way it improves on the quality of current 3D environment software and enables images of artefacts to be shown in far more detail.”
The International Panorama Council’s 16th annual conference being held in the UK for the first time, is the ideal opportunity for the university to highlight the new software and other innovations and expertise in the field of digital imaging and virtual environments.
Panorama, in its general sense, is any wide view of a physical space whether in painting, drawing, photography, film and video or 3D model. It was coined by the Irish painter Robert Barker to describe his panoramic paintings of Edinburgh in 1792, which were shown on a cylindrical surface and viewed from the inside.
Delegates from around the world will gather at the university for the three-day event (September 1–3) where the theme will be ‘Panoramas in the Virtual World: The exploration of old techniques and new techniques in panorama creation and exhibition.’
The conference, which has previously been held in New York, Beijing and The Hague, will give the opportunity for experts in the field of literature and visual culture, photography and digital technology innovation to share ideas, research and expertise.
They will be discussing historic and contemporary panoramas as well as the application of emerging technologies on panoramas. Keynote speakers include David Robinson, a film critic and historian, and a collector and student of the archaeology of cinema, Dr Mimi Colligan who writes on 19th-century popular culture and biography and Sara Velas, a visual artist and the founder and director of The Velaslavasay Panorama in Los Angeles.
Mr Woolner said: “As this is the first time this prestigious conference has been held in the UK it really puts Plymouth on the international map and gives us the chance to share with experts the cutting edge developments in digital imaging and virtual environments being made in the city.
“The conference will present an enlightening spectrum of talent, discovery and knowledge all linked by an enthusiasm for panoramas and the encompassing visual experience they create.”
