Fifth-year student at the Leicester Medical School, Kelly Pesticcio, competed with over 40 finalists to win the title after a series of interviews and three separate events dressed up in Welsh wear, formal wear and party wear.
Kelly decided to take part in the Miss World pageant after learning from a friend how the organisation behind the competition is aiming to help young children diagnosed with terminal cancer.
She commented: “Being a medical student you go into the hospitals and see all of the sick children, you feel really helpless, and I wanted to find another way of helping them.”
Kelly’s inspiration to become a doctor is in part due to her being diagnosed with scoliosis, a congenital abnormality of the spine.
The director of Vibe models who organise the event said: “In recent years, we’ve really directed the focus of the competition towards charitable contribution. Beauty with a purpose is one of the key drivers behind the Miss World organisation, and it is something we are really keen to follow.”
Contestants who made it into the final had to organise fund raising events. Kelly taught cheerleading to young children and held a Nations Night at the University of Leicester. She said, “The Nations Night was a lot of fun, it involved everyone dressing up in their national dress and just having fun.” In total Kelly managed to raise £660.
Overall, this year the Miss Wales competition managed to raise more than £50,000, beating last years total of £14,500.
Judges of the 2007 competition included Sarah Cornelius of the Joshua Foundation, Glyn Wise of Big Brother fame, Alex Jones, TV Presenter, Huw Rhys S4C’s fashion editor, and Mike Phillips, the Wales and Osprey’s rugby star.
Kelly will now go on to represent Wales in the Miss World competition which will be held in China later in the year.
Paula Abbandonato, PR Director of Vibe Models, said: “We are thrilled with our winner and delighted to have raised so much for charity at the same time. It’s been a very exciting year and we wish her the best of luck at Miss World later this year.”
