Having been left and forgotten at train stations, dumped and collected-up by local councils, or passed on as surplus by the Royal Mail, the bikes are now aboard a 40ft container lorry in transit to Dodowa in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Once there, the bikes will be donated to a school to provide transport and mobility for the pupils and staff. The group have also sent over tools and spare parts in the hope that these can be used to kit a workshop and facilitate the teaching of new skills.
Jason Finch, a member Greasefingers, said of the recent shipment, going to be weird not having such a large amount of bikes in the warehouse anymore. promised myself not to refill it again so quickly, but it tempting. The Royal Mail has 'thousands' of used bikes stacked up in their own warehouses not being used by anyone!?
Keen to also encourage cycling closer to home, Greasefingers open their workshop at 100 Vauxhall Walk, London, SE11 5EL, to the public every Saturday 10am-4pm for free help and tuition in repairs. Bikes can be brought for repair or for donation if unwanted.
Greasefingers have an installation to promote cycling in London designed by Goldsmiths Design student, Tom Pande, which is currently on display in the shop window of the flagship Timberland store on Regent Street. The group are also currently working on an installation from recycled bike parts for the 慚ade in Goldsmiths?exhibition space in the Richard Hoggart Building, New Cross, which opens next week.
