With over thirty hours of children and adults television under her belt UCLan’s Royal Literary Fund fellow is set to pass on her expertise.
Helen’s screenwriting credits include Bad Girls, Grange Hill, Biker Grove and Dream Team.
Helen has also story-lined Children’s Ward, Crossroads and Emmerdale, her areas of expertise focusing on drama, children’s television and animations.
Helen commented, “I'm looking forward to meeting a wide variety of students from all courses, and from all walks of life. I'm hoping to learn as much from the students as they will from me.”
Helen has ten years experience as a lecturer and mentor on the MA in TV and Radio Scriptwriting at the University of Salford, this is her first year as a Royal Literary Fund Fellow.
Helen said: “I started teaching screenwriting pretty much straight after graduating from a Film and TV Production degree in 1992, and have been teaching and mentoring screenwriting students on BA, MA, and short courses ever since.”
Helen said: “I remember being very inspired by Lynda La Plante's TV series ‘Widows’ when I watched it as a teenager in the 1980s.
“Nowadays I'll watch anything written by Paul Abbott or Tony Marchant, both brilliant and provocative screenwriters. I also have a soft spot for Russell T. Davies' original work, like ‘Queer As Folk’ and ‘Second Coming’. In terms of film, it's difficult to pinpoint one particular writer but Robert Towne's screenplay for the Roman Polanski film ‘Chinatown’ is a masterpiece.”
