Introduction to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth
University of Wales, Aberystwyth is located in a beautiful, remote town in west Wales that has a fabulous view over Cardigan Bay.
Prominent among the courses that it offers are biological sciences, information and library studies, geography and earth sciences and Welsh. Some estimate that 10% of students speak Welsh as a first language and, in the town, the number of Welsh speakers is closer to 50%. The former figure is perhaps a little high given that, in 1997/98, only 8% of students came from within 50 miles of Aberystwyth.
The university is explicit about the advantages that it offers to students. Most soon fall for Aberystwyth's charm. A large proportion of new degree students are offered accommodation by the university: in 1997/98, that figure was 90%.
It is not just the living arrangements that are impressive, other facilities are also highly rated. Student life and entertainments are taken seriously, but this does not dim the university's commitment to making its graduates employable.
In The Meaning of Liff, Douglas Adams and John Lloyd define Aberystwyth as a "nostalgic yearning which is, in itself, more pleasant than the thing being yearned for"; Niall Griffith is less whimsical in his novels, Grits and Sheepshaggers, which are set in and around the town. What Derec Llwyd Morgan, vice-chancellor and Welsh poet, makes of its place in literature is not revealed.
