WhatIS Post Production, and Why is it important to the creation ofPortraits? I'm Stan P. Cox II, Photographic Portrait Artist. In this shortarticle Im going to explain why POST PRODUCTION isVital to the creation of PORTRAITSIn the previousarticles in this series Ive given definitions of PHOTOGRAPHY andPORTRAITS, talked about ARTISTICINTENT, PLANNING a Portrait, LIGHTING and CAMERA ANGLES and COMPOSITION. Those are all parts of the PRODUCTION part of creating a Portrait. Now Im going to talk about thePOST PRODUCTION part of Portrait Creation.Prior to theDigital Revolution Retouching and Art work was done ON the filmnegative and ON the actual Print ofthe Portrait! A tedious and costly procedure! Thank God for Digitalphotography and Photoshop! There are threeprimary phases of POST PRODUCTION involved in creating Portraits.First there are the ColorBalancing, Saturation, and Contrast adjustments. Then comes the ArtWork and Enhancements. Andfinally the Printing and Finishing of the Portrait. What used to bedone in the Darkroom with color filters, dodging and burning, is nowdone on a Computer utilizingsophisticated software programs like Photoshop. In Portraiture it isvitally important that the skintones are correct and pleasing. Actually I wouldsay its more important that they be Pleasing thanCorrect! The Color Temperature of the Light isa major player in this particular area. Now in Photoshopit is a simple matter to change the color temperature of the light.Likewise it is a simple matter toadjust the Saturation of the colors, and adjust the Contrast in theimage. These adjustments arejudgment calls on the part of the Portrait Artist, so its amatter of aesthetics, and personalpreference. Then theres theArtwork. In Portraiture one of the objectives is to make an imagethat is Complimentary to the subject. So the Artworkwill include things like removing blemishes, softening lines andwrinkles, enhancing the eyes, andwhitening teeth. The Artwork may also include techniques that furtherdraw the viewers attention to thesubject, such as vignetting, or selective blurring. SO, just as Artis in the eyes of the beholder, it isimpossible to list everything that an artist may include inthe enhancements and artwork to, a Portrait. Allthese enhancements are indispensable in the process of turning aphotograph into a Portrait. For moreinformation about how You can be sure to have the best possibleportrait made for you, go to YourPerfectPortait.net.In the nextarticle Ill explain how PRINTING and FINISHING plays into theCreation of PORTRAITS
