HowImportant are the Printing and Finishing of Portraits? I'm Stan P. Cox II, Photographic Portrait Artist. In this shortarticle Im going to explain just how important PRINTING andFINISHING are in the creation of PORTRAITSIn the previousarticle I talked about the first 2 phases of Post Production theartwork that goes into turning aPhotograph into a PORTRAIT. Now, after all the planning and thecreation of the photographs, thenthe careful attention to color balance, saturation and contrast, andthe Artwork and Enhancements haveall been done, resulting in a beautiful photographic portrait, wouldit make sense to print it onregular typing or copy paper? Or for that matter, would it bereasonable to print it on a standard desktopprinter? Absolutely NOT!Why not? Well, because in order to reproduce the fine detail, and the beautifulcolor and shading that theartist invested their time and talent into getting just right, aPortrait needs to be printed on the right typeof high quality media, such as Ultra Premium Photo paper, or Fine Art media such as PremierArt Canvas. Thesemedia have a high white point designed to enable the fine nuances ofcolor and shading to be reproducedaccurately in the print.Of course nomatter how fine the media is, if the printer is not capable ofrendering the image accurately with propersaturation and intensity of color, the print will be seriouslylacking. Therefore it is critically importantto use the finest print media, and printersthat are designedfor printing the finest details and the most accuratecolors.Once all thosecriteria are satisfied and the print is made to be just as beautifulas the artist envisioned, then steps shouldbe taken to preserve the beauty of the portrait print, and to protectit. For this reason, the best portraitphotographers will apply a coating of a lacquer based art guard tothe print, and mount it on an acid-freemount board. The art guardcoating adds UV protection, protection against most environmentalpollutants and finger prints, as well asadding longevity to the print. Mounting the print on an acid-freemount board gives the print substantialrigidity and prevents dinging and creasing the print when handling, and makes it easy to frame.
