Whatpart does COMPOSITION play in creating Portraits? Inprevious articles Ive given definitionsof PHOTOGRAPHY and PORTRAITS, talked about ARTISTIC INTENT, PLANNINGa Portrait, and LIGHTING and CAMERA ANGLES. In COMPOSING a Portraitone needs to take into account the Intentand the Mood thatis to be portrayed. The subject may belooking directly into the camera... or not, depending on theIntent... Ifthe Portrait is to be of one individual, the COMPOSITION will bedifferent than for a Portrait of a couple ...or for a Group orFamily. Again, the FacialExpression, and oftenthe Body Language or Poseare all integral, so the purpose of all the other elements in theComposition is to supportor influence theperception of thesubjects Personality and or Mood. If the Portrait isto be of an individual in a room, the question becomes, Is thereanything that would enhancethe story of thisPortrait that might be included as a prop? If so, then by allmeans include it... If not, then dont add anything. However,Space itself - or the environment - could be a Compositional element! In many, if not mostcases, in an individual Portrait, the subject will fill the frame, oreven OVER fill the frame such as when the top of the head is croppedout to emphasize the eyes and facial features. If the Individualis outdoors, then the environment becomes either an additionalpersonality in the Composition, orjust a background. Generally if the environment is to be simply thebackground, then again the subject will fill the frame, and thebackground will be thrown out of focus. If on the otherhand the environment will be used in the Composition as anidentifying element, the subject may beplaced to one side of the frame in order to allow the environment tocontribute to the feeling of thePortrait. When the Portraitis of a group, such as a Family, then while the Facial Expressionsare still of top importance, BodyLanguage or Pose becomes equally important because now the Portraitwill want to show therelationships within the family or group.Forthis reason, I believe that InterpretivePortraits are moreexpressive. That is when the family is engaged in an activitytogether, rather than looking directly into the camera. However, the samerules apply as far as the Composition. If the Portrait is being madein a room or studio, thenunless a prop will add to the story of the Portrait, dontinclude any. If the Portrait is being made in theenvironment, then it should be included as an additionalpersonality to enhance the overall feeling of thePortrait, or it should be minimized and thrown out of focus, and thepeople fill the frame. In the nextarticle Ill explain why POST PRODUCTION is so vital to CreatingPORTRAITSFor more information on how you can have your perfect portrait created for you, go to YourPerfectPortrait.net.
