Gita Levy describes her taut, probing art as "an experimental state of mind". In acrylic, oil, and mixed-media, Levy conjures a world of bold protagonists, misty backgrounds, and dark, blocky shadows. She paints scenes in which one person is depicted in black and white and another in bright colors, or a highly detailed tunnel opens out onto a blank space. Part surrealism, part abstraction, her pieces show a world where emotional realities overrule what we know to be true.Levy paints stylized figures, animals, and landscapes that mix symbolic and psychological themes. Her canvases often show imagined versions of real scenes, such as the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem or a hallucinogenic vision of a child's rocking horse. She also creates what can only be described as portraits: intimate, thoughtful likenesses of women, often full-length, that function as much as character studies as figural ones. Levy was born in Israel, where she continues to live and work today. She has exhibited and studied art all over the world, including in France, Italy, and New York City. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.
