Indian artist Vinod More creates compelling abstract expressionist paintings with a primitivist bent that are as laden with emotional meaning as they are stunning in terms of visual content. Combining rich, resonant color with often shadowy forms, More masterfully builds compositions that speak to the most basic truths of our existence. More works initially from writings, slowly translating words into form and color as he seeks to capture the very vibrations, or essence, beyond an idea—taking the viewer on a journey into the very depths of the human self.Above all, More seeks through his art to achieve a deeper understanding of the human species and the intersections between humanity, science, philosophy, spirituality, and ultimately God. As More explains, “I try to speak universal language that comes through emotional traumas. I am always keen on removing subjective influence and work on core emotional values. Mainly, my art is influenced by physical and emotional destruction and disturbance that humankind has created in peaceful and beautiful nature.” Vinod More currently lives and works in Mumbai, India. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.
