The landscape photography of Cynthia Chace Gray is intriguing and mysterious, almost abstract in its use of light and shadow, yet infused with a sense of discovery. Working with poet Aden Thomas, the two collaborated on every photograph, transforming words into images and vice versa. Gray is adamant about keeping her photographs intuitive and free of manipulation; she never touches up or alters her work, nor does she employ artificial lighting. Instead, Gray focuses on creating authentic pieces centered around the theme of illumination: illumination of the soul, nature, and the visual world. In particular, Gray’s photography expresses her love of the western landscape and how it has illuminated her own life path in discovering the divine beauty all around us.A former editor for Hearst and Conde Nast, Gray currently lives and works in Wyoming, at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. She says the two things she wants her photography to accomplish is to capture a moment in time without pretense or artifice, and to help her viewers see beyond themselves. The exhibition spotlights eight premier contemporary photographers who play with visual expectations and technical limitations. Three artists take on the landscape format: there are horizons filtered through layers of atmospheric gauze, otherworldly plains shot in high detail, and cityscapes framed as endless, depthless fields of pure pattern. In black-and-white and color, the viewer is offered visions of the world as yawning or claustrophobic, logical or chaotic, dreamy or cold. Alongside these are the work of an accomplished animal photographer who creates psychological portraits with her naturalistic works. Another featured photographer builds her own still life compositions, but subverts their classical realism for her unique narrative aims, and yet the quiet dreamlike works of another photographer bring a unique balance to the collection. Rounding out the exhibition are two abstract artists who use their technical prowess and historical knowledge of process to create photographs of pure light and pattern. Though the interests run far and wide among these artists, the show is an unambiguous message of modernity.
