Florian Mueller's work occupies a space between memory and reality, between physical potential and impossibility. His photography reaches for these spaces through the use of vintage cameras, meticulously studied techniques, and digital processing which together produce pieces that seem both familiar and reminiscent of the future. Mueller's palette in particular leans towards dreamy scenes occupied by a cast of mysterious characters. In his more abstract work, Mueller uses superimposition and a blurring of boundaries to convey the same sense of puzzling mystery left for the viewer to unravel.A recurring theme in Mueller's work is the creation of abstract images from landscapes and structures with Mueller playing a role between painter and architect. The physical transparency of these alterations belies their thematic opacity, which encourages the viewer to pause and piece together Mueller's process. Mueller obliges in revealing the emotional heart of his work, as he skillfully melds moments of mystery and intrigue with flourishes of contrasting colors and the intersecting lines of his superimposed structures. Florian Mueller lives and works in Germany. He has been recognized worldwide for his photography, including honorable mentions at the International Photography Awards and the Black & White Spider Awards as well as top prizes from the German Association of Freelance Photographers and International Color Awards.Exhibition Dates: November 8, 2016 – November 30, 2016Reception: Thursday November 10, 2016, 6:00pm - 8:00pmGallery Hours: Tues-Sat 11-6Gallery Location: 530 West 25th St, Chelsea, New YorkEvent URL: http://www.agora-gallery.com/artistpage/Florian_Mueller.aspx Featured Artists:Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art PhotographyCynthia Chace Gray | Florian Mueller | Iryna Brown | Bree Castillau | Mary Pearson | Kathleen Messmer | Steven Anggrek | Antonio Biagiotti About the ExhibitionThe modern photographer in Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art PhotographyIllumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography opens this November at Agora Gallery. The exhibition spotlights eight premier contemporary photographers who play with visual expectations and technical limitations. Three artists take on the landscape format: there are horizons filtered through layers of atmospheric gauze, otherworldly plains shot in high detail, and cityscapes framed as endless, depthless fields of pure pattern. In black-and-white and color, the viewer is offered visions of the world as yawning or claustrophobic, logical or chaotic, dreamy or cold. Alongside these are the work of an accomplished animal photographer who creates psychological portraits with her naturalistic works. Another featured photographer builds her own still life compositions, but subverts their classical realism for her unique narrative aims, and yet the quiet dreamlike works of another photographer bring a unique balance to the collection. Rounding out the exhibition are two abstract artists who use their technical prowess and historical knowledge of process to create photographs of pure light and pattern. Though the interests run far and wide among these artists, the show is an unambiguous message of modernity.
