Thistutorial will require some specialty tools. If you are interested in purchasingany of the tools used for this tutorial they are listed as below:Otherimportant tools:1/2inch impact gun1/2inch breaker bar1/2drive socket set, up to 36mmAirhammer with chisel bit STEP1:Verifythe wheel bearing thats making noise. On test drive while swaying vehicle fromleft to right the side that gets noisy is opposite of the direction yourturning. For instance, If the wheel bearing noise gets louder while swaying thevehicle to the left the bad bearing is on the right side of the vehicle.Subarus are AWD so you can simply lift the vehicle and run in gear. Listen toeach individual bearing with a stethoscope. This tutorial will be for a leftrear wheel bearing. Now that you have your problem child identified remove thewheel , drum and the 32mmaxel nut. If you do not have a 1/2 inch impact gun loose axel nut beforelifting the vehicle. Loosen and remove the long 19mm lower control arm suspension bolt. Hopefully itcomes out ok for you, I suggest some penetrating oil. Separate the axel fromthe hub and let it lay down. Re-install the long 19mm suspension bolt. Attach the slide hammer with3-way slider and some lug nuts then knock out the hub. You can also you the hubremover in the hub tamer kit or even a large brass drift and hammer. STEP2:Nowthat you have the hub removed go ahead and cut off the seal. You now have toremove the inner race off the hub. A lot of the time I will mount the hub in avise and knock off the race with an air hammer and chisel bit. You have to bevery careful as not to damage the hub when doing it this way. Better yet youcan use the 2-jaw puller for removing bearing races. It comes in the hub masterkit. Now that you have the bearing race removed inspect the hub for damage. Thenewbearing must fit tightly on the hub. Remove the snap ring located on the outerpart of the race. If you are doing a Subaru front wheel bearing the snap ringwill be located on the inner side of the race. Set up the hub tamer to removethe bearing race towards the outside. Use either 1/2 inch impact gun or a 1/2inch breaker bar, 36mmsocket and a 27mmfor the other end. Once you have the old bearing race removed clean anyresidual grease left behind. STEP3:Wheninstalling the new bearing race keep the plastic retainer and bearings inplace. Careful as to keeping it clean. There is a Subaru service bulletinstating not to add grease to the wheel bearings. Leave the bearing as is andinstall. Once you have the bearings and race installed as an assembly removethe plastic retainer. Do not forget to install snap ring and new outer wheelseal. Be sure to pack wheel seal with grease. Configure the hub tamer toinstall the hub. Installthe hub. I have been told to only use the impact gun for removing the bearingor hub and not for installation. I have always used the impact gun for bothinstallation and removal and have never had a problem. I will have to say thatits easier on the bearing when using hand tools for installation. STEP4:Nowyou should have the new bearing and hub installed. Remove and replace bothinner wheel seals. Dont forget to grease these seals also. Re-install axel andtighten axel nut. Re-check bearing after tightening the axel nut. If thebearing is now hard to turn it can be one of these two things. Either youinstalled inner wheel seal incorrectly or you did not press the hub into thebearing race all the way. Tighten axel nut all the way, loose and thenre-torque. If now ok dont worry you just did not have the hub all the wayseated into the bearing race. by tightening and re-torque you properly seatedthe hub into the race. Dont forget to ping the axel nut tab to prevent backingoff. Adjust brake shoes, making sure braking mechanisms are free and installdrum. Install tires, torque lug nuts and test drive vehicle. Youwill find an oil seal at the back of the hub, covering the inner bearing. Dontbother to dig it out, it will come away with the cup (the outer bearing race)when you remove it.
