A new radio station which has been launched to welcome new students to the University of Wales, Newport, has received the endorsement of BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.Huw, famous as the face of BBC TV’s Ten o’clock News, recorded a personal message to be used as a jingle on the radio station when he was at the University to receive an Honorary Fellowship last week.
The radio station – which currently goes out worldwide on the internet – is the brainchild of Andrew Cargill, the newly elected President of the Students’ Union at the University.
“We launched the radio station as part of our Freshers Week celebrations,” said 20-year-old Andrew. “I called it Radio Noize, after the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Peter Noyes, who has been really helpful in getting the whole thing off the ground. Initially, it will be broadcast on the internet but in a couple of months we hope to make it an FM station broadcasting to a wide area around Newport.
“The launch was a great success with live music from The Envys, a band formed by students on the creative sound and music course, and up and coming Newport group Star Terrace. We hope that Radio Noize will provide a platform for lots of local talented musicians and writers,” added Andrew.
