The magnificent clock, made by David Jones (1831-1867), the most prominent Lampeter clock maker, was generously gifted to the University by Dan Cohn-Sherbok, professor of Judaism at Lampeter.
In another Lampeter connection, the clock was restored by a former student of St David’s College Leslie Jones, who studied in the 1950s and who now lives in Llandeilo. Leslie explained that he had to restore the case and movement of the clock but otherwise it was in an almost original condition.
Very little is known of the clockmaker David Jones. In D. Linnard’s definitive history of Welsh clocks “Wales Clocks and Clockmakers” (2003) David Jones is placed in both nearby Rhydowen and Lampeter, and he is buried in Pant y Defaid near Llandysul.
The clock has been installed in the Cloisters and is open for all to see. If anyone has any further information about the clockmaker David Jones, they are welcome to contact the University.
