Big Green Week aims to engage staff and students and raise awareness of environmental issues at the University campus, as well as demonstrate how to 'green' personal lifestyles. The event will also launch the work of the Environment Team. Before and during the Big Green Week staff and students are being urged to make a green pledge, committing themselves to a small change that will benefit the environment, either on campus or at home. There are prizes for staff and students for making pledges.
The programme for the week includes:
Monday: Travel and Transport Day
Come and test some weird and wonderful bikes, hitch a lift to your lecture on a rickshaw, buy a second hand bike, visit the bike doctor, get some cycle training and learn about other sustainable transport methods available in Leicester at the sustainable transport show. Also get involved with the alternative transport race, bike fancy dress and big bike ride to the botanical gardens!
Tuesday: Local, Fair Trade and Organic Food Day
Come and see what Leicester can produce locally and organically and see what Fair Trade has to offer at the farmers market in Queens hall from 10 till 4pm. Bring your weekly shopping money as there will be loads to buy! Also get involved with the baking competition and healthy eating workshops.
Wednesday: Climate Change and Energy Day
Go on a free environmental field trip! We will be running buses to an Ecohouse and an Environmental Centre all day. Or you can stay on campus and visit the solar power cinema showing short films. Also get involved with our climate change communication workshop and RED Leicester at the Students’ Union will be turning GREEN for the night!
Thursday: Waste and Recycling Day
Look out for all the useful things we can do with our University waste and take part in art workshops (week before BGW) to create masterpieces to be shown on this day. Visit the ethical fashion show which will be showcasing the latest charity shop finds and second hand clothes shop outfits. If you are feeling creative make a garment for entry in our fashion show from recycled materials to win a prize!
Friday: Pledge Day
Come and celebrate the success of the week at our massive Ecofair on Victoria Park with a range of activities inside and outside. At 1pm make sure you are prepared for the University’s biggest ever photo opportunity on Victoria Park and take part in the Big Green stunt! Finally let’s end the week by turning off all equipment in departments, buildings and other areas of campus so we can calculate how much energy can be saved over a weekend if we all switched off!
