The Tre Telynog housing estate in Cwmbach, near Aberdare, has been officially awarded ‘Secured By Design’ status – the official police flagship for security and designing out crime.
In 2004, the estate was identified by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council as being in need of major environmental improvements works. So, the Council teamed up with Glamorgan’s Centre for Engineering, Research and Environmental Applications (CEREA) to develop and deliver a concept that meets 21st century living quality environmental expectations.
Secured by Design achieves a reduction of crime risk by combining minimum standards of physical security and well-tested principles of natural surveillance and defensible space. Research shows that Secured by Design can reduce burglary and car crime by 50% and criminal damage by 25%.
Now, with the works complete, the partnership applied to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Crime Prevention Initiatives Ltd for Secure By Design accreditation of the completed development. This accreditation is the first for the borough and also the first to be awarded to a social housing estate regeneration project in Wales.
Professor Demetrios Djialli, Director of CEREA, commented, “The design and successful delivery of the objectives of the project demonstrate the effectiveness of working in partnership with RCT. The active participation and contribution of the residents, the council officers, ward councilors, the police and other support agencies proved the key success factor of this project. It was a challenging task but highly rewarding in terms of making a positive difference in the living environment of the Tre-telynog community.”
