With Lincolnshire landfills anticipated to be full by the year 2025, Lincoln College has taken its recycling responsibility to a new level by seeking to reduce the amount of waste sent from the college by a minimum of 50%.
Blackfriars Restaurant and Coffee Shop, has taken great steps in pushing forward recycling systems and finding responsible methods for disposal. After just 2 weeks of term, the results have been staggering with the College boasting a reported 60% reduction on the waste it sends to the landfills.
Catering Manager, Sharon Birkett, states that, “ the kitchen used to fill 12 industrial waste bins per week, however as a result of the new recycling methods introduced and increased awareness, the weekly count is down to just 4 – a reduction of over 66%.”
As part of the heightened recycling process adopted in Blackfriars, used vegetable oil from cooking in the kitchen is sent to a local fuel producer, recyclables are disposed of by another Lincolnshire company and cardboard is baled so that more can be taken away at one time, thereby reducing fuel emissions.
Catering containers are washed and disposed of in the appropriate recycling bins, along with the plastics and papers from the lunch trays. A variety of recycling bins are located around the restaurant and campus for students and staff to dispose of their refuse responsibly; a habit adopted by the majority and has resulted in the need for larger recycling bins!
The overall success is significantly driven by increased awareness. All induction packs contain information about recycling, which is re-iterated across the campus. This includes menu cards on the table tops of Blackfriars to posters and notices throughout the college informing what can and can’t be recycled in a bid to minimise contamination in the bins.
With great results so early on and a proactive approach which involves constantly look into becoming more environmentally aware, Lincoln College looks to do its bit to positively change the future of the environment.
