The University of the West of England has won a silver award in the West of England Travel Plan Awards 2007 held at the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Wednesday (19 September). The scheme is a joint initiative between Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire councils.
The awards are now in their seventh year and demonstrate how employers in the West of England Partnership area are helping to reduce congestion, pollution, parking problems and the results of inactive lifestyles.
Several of those attending from the Bristol area will travel to the event using one of UWE's new Ulink buses, a new service for students and staff starting this autumn.
Steve Ward, UWE's Transport Planner, who will accept the award on behalf of UWE said, “We are delighted that our efforts in this area have been recognised in this way. Along with other companies in the area, we understand that our responsibilities lie not just to our students and our staff to make their journeys as straightforward as possible, but we are keen to promote sustainable transport in the local area. I believe this award shows we are moving in the right direction.”
The benefits of travel plans are fully recognised and endorsed by the CBI and Business West. Tackling congestion and CO2 emissions in particular are now at the forefront of business policies.
This year's awards ceremony is being hosted by North Somerset Council and the awards will be presented by the Chairman of Council, Cllr David Shopland.
Nigel Hutchings, Regional Affairs Director of Business West, said: "The region has a huge amount to offer both as a place to live and work, but if it is to remain that way we must change our commuting habits by leaving the car at home and walk, cycle or use public transport whenever possible.
"The award winners have all demonstrated their commitment to encouraging their employees and visitors to leave their cars at home in favour of greener forms of travel. UWE's new Ulink bus services are an excellent example of effective travel planning in practice."
Fourteen awards will be presented this year to employers from a wide range of sectors, including two Gold awards made to DAS and Norwich Union Life.
