Sir Roderick, a former University of London Professor said: “I am delighted to be returning to the University and honoured to have been asked to lead on the work being undertaken by the School, which consists of Institutes performing roles of national importance to their subjects.”
He added: “The School is currently undergoing a review by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and one of my main objectives will be to lead the School in responding to this review. I will also be actively involved in publicising the School’s national and international work in facilitating research in the humanities and social sciences.”
Sir Graeme Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, commented: “The University and the School of Advanced Study are very fortunate to have been able to secure the services of Sir Roderick who will bring to the Deanship a wealth of experience in academic research and academic management, which will be of great benefit to both institutions.”
Sir Roderick, who has a particular interest in part-time education and the cause of disadvantaged students, was knighted for his services to higher education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2005.
Sir Roderick is also the author of many books and articles on technological change, the use of IT in the study of history, the evolution of technical education and on changes in human height, health and welfare. His work draws on the expertise of human biologists, demographers, economists, nutritionists, physiologists and others to create the new discipline of anthropometric history.
