University crime stoppers unveil new campaign
posted 14/08/2006
The security team at the University of Salford has unveiled a raft of new measures aimed at reducing crime carried out against staff and students.
As a result of the measures already taken, crime is at a level of 6 offences per 1,000 students and staff per year, compared with an average of 115 per 1,000 for the general public in the North West.
However, the University is not resting on its laurels. New initiatives include an in-depth personal briefing for all new students and staff and a dedicated email address to report any sensitive or confidential matters direct to the Head of Security. These will all add to the existing measures which have helped to cut crime dramatically over the past ten years.
In 2005 the University began running a free bus service around the campus and surrounding accommodation sites to ensure students do not have to walk unaccompanied especially at night . The University has also had a liaison officer on the Campus from Greater Manchester Police for a number of years.
The campaign called Your Security - Our Concern is being launched to coincide with Freshers' Week in September which sees the arrival of thousands of young people into the city - many of whom are leaving home for the first time.
Mark Shutt, the University Head of Security, who is leading the campaign, said: "As with any large city there are a number of precautions that should be taken by everyone. We know that new students are especially vulnerable at this time of year and we are doing everything in our power to minimize any risk."
