One they have obtained permanent residency they have the daunting task of finding a job. Below I discuss how many accounting organisations recruit staff. Every organisation isdifferent, and the recruitment process is run by people, not computers, so there is a human element in the employment process!

Recruitment on campus Some organisations will go onto campus, interview final year students (sometimes in earlier years) and offer jobs dependent upon satisfactory completion of the course. In particular, the larger international accounting firms will do this: so do a few larger corporations and some government departments. There is usually a lot of competition for these jobs, and many students apply without realising that they could be closing off other options.

Before applying for, or accepting, jobs from on campus interviews, be aware that the great majority of employers will not be recruiting in this way. Getting a job offer while still studying is a great feeling, but make sure that you recognise the range of jobs and the range of employers who do not recruit in this way.

Graduate positions Not only are organisations different, but they will recruit differently according to the position. For graduates who have just completed university,larger organisations (and many smaller ones) will engage a recruitment agency to advertise the position, receive and review applications, conduct interviews and prepare a shortlist. The employers will review the shortlist,select a number for interview, and make job offers on the basis of the interviews.

See which employment agencies are advertising business jobs in the newspapers: they are also likely to be the ones that collect graduate resumes. Once an agency has your resume, they may review it for a range of positions.

When you upgrade your resume, make sure you send it through to the employment agencies holding copies of your resume. You may also find that consultants at the agencies give you some good advice on career planning.

Senior Executive Positions You may see these advertised in the news pages of the newspapers or in specialist newspapers like the Australian Financial Review. You may not be quite ready for these positions yet, but one day... Many senior positions are never advertised, but recruitment consultants approach potential executives to assess willingness to move to a new employer. If you are unexpectedly asked to lunch by a recruitment consultant, that could be the reason!

And in the middle...And in the middle anything could happen. Some organisations will continue touse employment agencies, while others (usually those with a human resources
department) will do their own recruiting. The more a position depends upon a specialist range of skills developed over time, the more likely the particular position will be advertised.
