QMUC dates back to the establishment of the Edinburgh School of Cookery in 1875, aimed at improving women's skills in the kitchen and promoting better health. A varied programme of courses is now on offer but the university college retains its vocational slant. The male:female ratio is 20:80. There are three campuses, including a state-of-the-art drama centre at the Gateway Theatre campus. Ambitious plans are under way to move from the other two campuses to a modern purpose-built one in Craighall, Musselburgh, on the eastern fringe of the city. Building work should be completed by September 2007. Some 96% of its graduates enter work or further training within six months. It will make its bid for full university title later this year.
Fees
Scottish and EU students from outside the UK do not pay tuition fees but are liable for a graduate endowment at the end of the course (£2,154 in 2004/5), though some are exempt. Annual tuition fee for other UK students likely to be around £1,700-£1,900.
Bursaries
Bursaries available for Scottish students under 25 from low-income families. Other grants available. Hardship funds available to help students in financial hardship and with childcare costs.
Accommodation
Not guaranteed, but priority is given to entrants who are under 19 on September 1 in the new academic session and to those who live 20 miles or more from QMUC, including international students. In 2005/6, accommodation in self-catering halls will range from £57.50-£67.50 a week. Part-catered accommodation will cost £75 a week and catered accommodation will cost £85 a week. Some self-catering flats will also be available at around £71.50 a week. Shared private accommodation in Edinburgh starts at around £260 a month exclusive.
