Some of the land has been sold to private owners but the monuments still stand. So, if you appreciate the significance of that great civilization you can choose from several guided tours or map assisted self-guided tours to explore the landmarks that they've left behind. They are scattered throughout the Yucatan peninsula. In fact you won't have to travel far from any of Playa del Carmen hotels to find a great number of the ruins in Chicken Itza, Coba and Tulum.
