Dunkeld is a fascinating small cathedral town, located just a little way to the south of Pitlochry, Scotland. Much of the town dates back to medieval times; the cathedral itself was built early in the 12th century, and is one of the oldest religious sites anywhere in Scotland with a wide selection of shops, bars, restaurants, museums and other fascinating features, Dunkeld is one of the best destinations you could pick for short breaks Scotland. In fact, Cathedral Street in its entirety has recently been renovated by the National Trust, and represents one of the most authentically preserved medieval streets in Great Britain. The marketplace and many of the other attractive houses in the centre of Dunkeld date back to the 17th century, having been rebuilt after the 1689 Battle of Dunkeld. From Dunkeld, visitors will be within easy reach of the picturesque Victorian village at Birnam by crossing the magnificent Tay Bridge, a seven-arched construction built by Thomas Telford in 1809. The houses around Birnam feature quaint, pointed gables, in a richly nuanced Victorian style. The place also has links with literature, as the nearby Birnam Wood was the site for Macbeths death, in Shakespeares much celebrated Scottish play. Dunkelds Hermitage Park is a beautifully scenic woodland area, complete with ornate gardens, nature trails and exotic trees. In 1738 the Duke of Atholl planted five rare Tyrolean larches here; sadly most of them have died over the years, but one still remains, and will be a fascinating sight for anyone with an interest in unusual horticulture! So, if youre looking for a cultural weekend break to Scotland, check in to the fantastic hotel Dunkeld. Located right in the town centre, from here youll be within easy reach of medieval streets, ancient churches, and a range of other fascinating attractions.
