For travelers interested in archaeology, Peru features fascinating destinations. An 11 day and 10 night archaeological adventure takes travelers to Chiclayo to see the Royal Tombs of Sipan, to Trujillo which is the site of the Chimu city of Chan Chan, and finally to Machu Picchu to see the iconic Inca citadel. Days 1 and 2 are spent in Lima, where some of Perus treasures are stored in government building and museums. The historic center is surrounded by must see sites including the Cathedral, the Palace of Lima, and the San Francisco Monastery. A city tour includes stops at these sites as well as the Larco Museum which hosts an amazing collection of artifacts from pre-Inca and Inca civilizations. Lima also has amazing dining options that travelers should not miss out on.The next 4 days are dedicated to the northern coast of Peru, where some recently discovered archaeological sites are located. From Lima, travel north to Trujillo, third largest city of Peru and one with a long history of pre-Columbian and Spanish occupation. The historic center of Trujillo is filled with countless Spanish-era architectural monuments; meanwhile, the nearby Temples of the Sun and Moon will amaze you with information about the Moche culture. On Day 4, visit the adobe city of Chan Chan, constructed by the Chimu culture. You can also visit the beach town of Huanchaco and the El Brujo complex.On Day 5, continue on to Chiclayo, fourth largest city in Peru, and host of the Sipan Museum which will give you further insight into the Moche culture. In the afternoon, visit the excavation site of the tomb, which amazingly remained intact even after centuries of looting by Spaniards and then Peruvians in the centuries since the conquest. On Day 6, your final day in the North, visit the Valley of the Pyramids in Tucume, which hosts 26 enormous brick pyramids.The next 4 days are dedicated to Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, where you will learn about the Inca civilization that came to dominate modern-day Peru as well as the coast of Ecuador, Chile, and inland into Bolivia and Argentina. Cusco was the imperial city and is filled with architectural remnants from this great civilization and also bears the lasting influence of Spanish colonization in its churches and houses combined with a touch of the modern as Cusco has progressed into the future. The beautiful Sacred Valley also has numerous archaeological sites, including the most iconic, Machu Picchu. You can extend your stay in Peru by trekking the Inca trail or spending an extra day in Machu Picchu.
