Located in central Bolivia to the west of Santa Cruz, the Amboro National Park offers unparalleled opportunities to see unique wildlife and ecosystems. The part is at the Elbow of the Andes, where the mountain range curves into the continent. The park, created in 1984, covers 1,709 sq miles (4,425 sq km).The national park is unique in that it lies at the intersection of various ecosystems: southwest Amazon moist forest, Chaco, Bolivian Yungas, and Bolivian montane dry forests. In particular, the Bolivian Yunga on eastern slopes of Andes marks the transition between Southwest Amazon moist forests and puna in the southeast. It exists within a specific range of elevations from 1,300 to 11,500 feet (400 to 3,500 meters). As a result of the varied ecosystems, both highland and lowland species exist here and there is much diversity in the flora and fauna. Scientists have only begun their exploration of the park, but so far 127 species of mammals have been identified, including 43 species of bats. Also residing within the park are Amazon species such as the puma, spectacled bear (the only species of bear in South America), and the ocelot.
