It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domes
EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA is the popular choice for a family vacation for locals as well as for the affluent, who have built their own chalet or villa by the Playa Puntillo. The locals are called gaditanos, and the affluent are called sevillanos.Although this part of the region is a bit away from the main towns and cities, it is still easily accessible by a local bus. For those who love a stroll, a 10 minute to 15 minute walk from town will lead you to El Puerto. It is a good choice to spend your afternoon as it has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly bars at the beach.Highlights of El PuertoThe main attraction in town is the rows of white painted warehouses along the streets and riverbanks, called sherry bodegas. Before the railway tracks were extended to Cadiz, all sherry shipments were transported via Santa Maria port. And there were opportunities for free wine tasting and winery tours for visitors by the vineyards in the region, although these are seldom nowadays.Tourist CenterThere are local tours which the visitor can take to discover the historical and architectural beauties in this region. The interesting thing about these tourist centers is that they are located in a 17th century convent, which has been converted into a beautiful tourism center. The tourism center of El Puerto is located at Calle Luna 22, close to the town plaza next to the ferry drop-offs. Within walking distance, you will find scrumptious seafood dishes in the restaurants with a good selection of shellfish in paper funnels, and a pint of beer to go with them. This proves to be the locals, as well as the visitors, favorite snack anytime. Locals and visitors alike prefer to enjoy the shady beach areas while watching life pass by.Main TransportationThe sea transport around here is the El Vapor, or ferry, which is a modern mode of transportation than that of steamboats in the past. However, boarding the ferry from Cadiz is the better alternative to the bus, as it is faster and less costly. The ferry trip takes only 40 minutes when departing from the Estación Marítima bay at specific times; every 2 hours, starting from 10 oclock a.m. every day. But different times apply during the summer. For those who prefer a different mode of crossing, you can try the catamaran service that operates 7 trips every day from the same location. The price is slightly more expensive than the ferry.
