ESTEPONA, which is located 30 km from Marbella on the West, is a refreshing Spanish resort compared to the other coastline resorts. Its accommodations are smaller but spacious enough for relaxation, with flower studded promenades, cobbled alleys, and two interesting plazas in the town.What is Estepona Famous For?Estepona boasts of the largest fishing fleet in the western side of Malaga, with a bustling fish market. The daily ritual at dawn is the auctioning of the catch from the morning fishing boats which port as early as 6 oclock a.m. The whole hive of activity is over within an hour.From the month of May, its the bullfighting season getting hyped up in the specially designed bullring which is reminiscent of the old sculpture by Henry Moore. The Fiesta y Feria kicks off the month of July for a week-long celebration which draws out the locals in full flamenco attire, transforming the whole atmosphere of Estepona.At the outskirts of Estepona, a small road along the coast of about 8 km, leads to the hills before coming to CASARES, which is a typical Andaluz white town. Its unique location of being entrenched in a steep hillside right beneath an ancient castle has drawn many affluent and artistic personalities.Another interesting feature here is the excellently preserved Roman baths. These are actually sulfur baths located 3 km away from Manilva village, which have been proclaimed to have healing properties. Be prepared to have a strong stench of sulfur on you for weeks should you be game to dive into the cavern for some healthful rejuvenation.The beaches here are quite different from other places as the sand is grayish in color instead of yellow; nevertheless, this makes it a unique trademark of this area in Costa del Sol. But you might find yellow sand around the Atlantic coast just around the corner.Tourists Amenities There is a bus depot on España Avenue, located west of the tourist centre, at the back of the seafront. There are hostels and plazas with bars for a short break too.GastronomyThere is never a worry about filling your stomach as there are plenty of selection at the town, with splendid marisquerias and freidurías all along the main street of Calle Terraza. You can also find tasty churrería at the south side of Calle Mayor which sells off quickly before the morning is over. The sheltered morning market at Calle Castillo offers a variety of food for your convenience.Estepona's nights come alive with music and songs at the rows of night spots behind the seafront which allow pedestrians only. Many locals enjoy the coolness of night life when it gets hot during the summer.
