Costa Rica´s Palo Verde National Park is a must see when traveling to Costa Rica. A park composed of thirteen distinct habitats; it offers a sharp contrast to the scenery of the volcanoes and beaches on the regular travel schedule of most Costa Rica packages. Yet this reserve offers paralleled beauty and an opportunity to wander through endangered ecosystems where you can spot many rare species who have found refuge in this reserve. The park includes evergreen and tropical forests, swamps, wetlands, and tidal estuarine ecosystems, making this exquisite reserve a haven for migrant birds from all over the Americas. Be sure to choose a Costa Rica package that includes this must-see stunning park. Generally travelers are suggested to stay overnight in one of the Bagaces or Tamarindo hotels to ensure that guests of the park arrive for the 8am opening to see the hundreds of species of flora and fauna. It is common place to start with two hour guided tour of the thirteen ecosystems and then either take a boat tour or hike the trails in the afternoon. During your tour you will hike to the top of the limestone cliffs of the park. Here you will have a picturesque view of the natural beauty of Costa Rica and you will also find a real appreciation for Costa Rica´s bio-diversity. There is also an option for a full day tour of the park available.Palo Verde National Park offers one of Central America´s most important marshlands making it one of the major draws of tourism to this location. The famous marshlands lie between the Tempisque and Bebedero rivers of Guanacaste. Here tourists come to watch the migratory waterfowl conduct their morning routines. Hopefully you will be lucky enough to spot the indigenous, but rare Jabiru Stork that is native to this area of Costa Rica. If you are interested in learning more about the marshlands, you can use the afternoon after your introductory tour to take a boat tour through this section of the reserve. There are two different boat tours that run through the brackish water of the Tempisque River. One of the tours will go up river to Charco and the second will go down river to Bird Island. Both offer unique ecosystems with a plethora of species as well as hundreds of egrets, herons, storks, ibis, ducks, grebes and jacanas. After your guided tour you will also have the option to explore this more than 45,000 acre National Park´s four major hiking trails. Each trail offers unique but spectacular scenic overlooks of various ecosystems for guests to enjoy. The trails merge at The Organization for Tropical Studies office where this national organization tests biological diversity programs for the park. They also offer a variety of courses for undergraduate and graduate university students who aid in the research being done at this location. Which ever ecosystem you gravitate to, be sure to dress appropriately and bring plenty of water. You will also be able to purchase refreshments in the park. The park also is equipped with restrooms, a gift shop, library and a restaurant for guests to use.
