Hammamet is the largest and one of the most picturesque resorts in Tunisia. There are no high buildings here - the rule says none of them can be higher than a cypress. As for its modern name, it derives from Arabic hammam which means bath . The labyrinth of its narrow streets will make you forget about what century you live in. But when enjoying the silence of the old city dont forget about shopping for souvenirs and national food. Best souvenirs you are advised to buy in Hammamet are: ceramics, hookahs, various handmade bags and purses. When walking around the streets of the citys historic centre Medina drop into one of local cafes and taste coffee with delicious Tunisian cookies. And of course try traditional Kuskus in a small restaurant. Ribat fortress still dominates the coast and the city centre. This is another monument of the Arabic epoch. For six centuries Ribat has been protecting the city from foreign aggressors. Of course, theres nothing that could threaten Hammamet now, but in 16th and 17th centuries pirates, Maltese knights and French fleet all of them attacked this Arabic city. The cultural centre of Hammamet stands in contrast to its calm medina. This is a modern building which hosts an annual international culture festival: famous artists perform at the outdoor Greek-Roman amphitheatre. Nowadays Hammamet is a European-class resort with developed infrastructure. There is a Nabeul coastal town adjoining it in the north whereas the southern part of Hammamet is a new tourists district, Yasmine Hammamet. The resort was built on a deserted coast and is especially popular with tourists who prefer modern facilities. Nowadays there are modern hotels and magnificent parks with fountains found not far from the sea. There are about 30 hotels built here capable of accommodating 14 thousand people. Those are mostly 4-star and 5-star hotels. And in the evening tourists can make their way to a disco, restaurant or a beautiful resort coastline to enjoy the beauty of a sunset. There is a total of 110 hotels all around Hammamet, and 2 new properties are opened every year. Most of them offer private beaches. By the way, the largest Tunisian golf club is also located in Hammamet. Hammamet is also the best choice for those who head for Tunisia to try all the pleasures of thalassotherapy. The largest Tunisian thalassotherapy complex, Bio Azur , is found at the resort. There are 54 treatment cabinets, seawater swimming pool, water massage, Turkish baths and diet restaurants here. Bio Azur houses three hotels: three-sat Bel Azur, four-star Sol Azur and five-star Royal Azur. The other thalassotherapy centre - Vital Center Thalgo is found in Hasdrubal Thalassa hotel. All in all, there are lots of reasons why you should have rest at Hammamet. This is a wonderful resort with long history and modern infrastructure you will want to see again.
