Palanga is a huge and popular health resort, located in the western part of Lithuania, by the Baltic Sea. The first settlements appeared here already in 3 century BC. As for historical documents, the name of Palanga was first mentioned in 1161, when the king of Denmark and his army came here. In 15-17 centuries Palanga became the main port of Lithuania however, in 1701 it was destroyed by Swedish army. In 1824 Palanga was purchased by Count Michal Tyszkiewicz. His grandson Jozef Tyszkiewicz created a pier here, thanks to which this territory became the favourite place for local people to stroll along. In the 19th century Palanga got the reputation of a famous summer resort, renowned for its mineral and mud-baths. Palanga boasts twice as many sunny days as the whole country of Lithuania, that is why every season (which is opened May to September) this place attracts about half a million tourists and holidaymakers. As for Palanga's attractions, one thing that we should mention in the first place is the Neo-Renaissance palace built in 1897, during the reign of Feliks Tyszkiewicz, Jozefs son. A vast park created by French landscape architect Edouard Andre surrounds this building. In 1960, the park was turned into a Botanical garden. Now it is considered to be one of the most beautiful and rich botanical gardens in Lithuania. The garden contains about 300 various sorts of trees and shrubs, including an oak tree planted to commemorate the popular leader president Antanas Smetona who ruled here from 1926 to 1939. Tyszkiewicz Palace now comprises the Amber museum, dedicated to the famous Lithuanian gold, which can still be found on the Baltic coast. The museum offers a great collection of amber and demonstrates the 40-million history of this material. The best places to stroll along are Jonas Basanavicius street and the pier with lots of cafes and entertainment venues. Following the old tradition, tourists come here in the evening to enjoy beautiful sunset. South-west from the Amber museum there is the Birutes mountain, which used to be the ancient pagan sanctuary and the place to study heavenly bodies. Nowadays this is a peaceful and romantic place with beautiful views over the city, especially popular with lovers. What else can you do in Palanga? One of the most popular ways to spend your time here is to go sunbathing. Palangas sandy beaches and pinewoods extend for almost 10 kilometres. Those beaches are wide, spacious, with soft and clean sand. Dressing cabins are installed all over their territory. It is a perfect location for a game of volleyball, trampoline jumping, and of course swimming. A good idea is also to hire a catamaran or a water bicycle. Those who come here to get treatment wont be disappointed as well. Palanga is famous for its thermal and mineral baths. It is helpful for those who have musculoskeletal system diseases, female disorders, atherosclerosis and other diseases. And, finally, there are loads of other entertainment venues for you: more than 2000 various cafes, restaurants and pubs, tennis courts, surfing, carting, swimming pools, bowling clubs& the most difficult thing would be to choose among them all.
