Reichstag is more than just a building; it is in fact a symbol of history and culture of Germany. A historical landmark, the Reichstag is the seat of the German Parliament. The Reichstag is located close to the Branderburger Tor (another important landmark) and before the collapse of the German Wall, it was right next to it.The building was conceived after the foundation of the German Empire in 1872, when need for a large parliamentary building in Berlin was felt. Paul Wallot designed an imposing neo-renaissance building. It was constructed between 1884 and 1894, and was funded with wartime reparation money from France. The famous inscription 'Dem Deutschen Volke' (To the German People) was only added in 1916.The Reichstag is more than 130 years old. Since its construction in 1872, the building has undergone many political and structural transformations. The Reichstag has closely escaped destruction many times during its 130 year history, and although it has undergone some major transformations over the years (not to mention the legendary wrapping of the building in the summer of 1995 by the artist Christo and his wife), it has never lost its symbolic political meaning for the German people. In 1933 a fire broke out in the building, which destroyed much of the Reichstag. There are different views and theories as who started the fire, many blame Communists but nothing is clear till this time. The building was even further damaged at the end of the war, when the Soviets entered Berlin. Long after witnessing the turmoil and tribulations in the history of Germany, the Reichstag proudly stands near Branderburger Tor reminding tourists and locals about the history of Germany.Click here to book hotels in Berlin
