Awhile ago, I got an email from one of the "gurus" I follow and it shocked me. The gist of it was this person wanted to trade services for a household item.To say it floored me would be an understatement. What was worse was a few days later t Automation technologies represent a fundamental aspect of any modern industry. God bless reporters. They dont make much money; theydont get much of the glory; and they generally worklong hours under withering deadline pressure. But heres the most important thing to remember aboutreporters if you want to get free publicity:Very often, theyre responsible for coming up withtheir own story ideas. This is called "enterprising."This is where you can become the reporters best friend- and reap a bonanza of free publicity for yourself. For the sake of convenience, Im going to groupnewspaper columnists with reporters in this discussion.(This may bother some columnists but I hope theyforgive me.)Im also going to group print reporters with broadcastreporters. (This will REALLY bother some printreporters, but I hope they also forgive me.)Im going to talk about anyone who loosely fits thedescription of "beat" reporter. Anyone whosresponsible for staying-current-with-and-reporting-on acertain topic like technology, business, crime, government, health, travel, consumer affairs, etc.And lets not forget the real heroes of everydayjournalism: the general assignment reporters andfeature reporters. While everyone I just mentioned sometimes gets assignedto cover certain stories, very often they findthemselves responsible for coming up with their ownideas. This is where your opportunity lies. Its been said that most general assignment reportersare a mile wide and an inch deep.In other words, they know a little bit about a lot ofthings, but they dont know a lot about anything.Even beat reporters have a learning curve - most of thetime they get assigned to a beat just because someoneHAS to cover it. Its not because they have any specialbackground or training in that particular subject.Helping them shorten that learning curve - becomingtheir top resource for insight and information on theirbeat - offers tremendous potential for getting freepublicity.Even if they dont write about you or attribute quotesto you right away, its just a matter of time beforeyou start showing up on the air and in print. So heres what to do.Find the "new kid on the block."Pitch your idea to someone farther down the newsroomhierarchy whos responsible for coming up with theirown stories. As a rule, reporters dont make nearly as much money aspeople think. So there tends to be a high turnover, with reporters moving from place to place fairly often. When a reporter is first hired, they generally wontknow much about their new job, and (this is extremelyimportant) wont have built up a list of sources yet.If you build a relationship and become one of thosesources you'll often find yourself getting freepublicity that's more believable, powerful productiveand profitable than any advertising you can buy at anyprice.
