Growing up around my dad I could always learn something new every day. This was going to hold true when I got my first job. There were lots of details to sort out and of coarse I wanted to do everything my self but I definitely needed his infinite guidance. At the time it did not seem like it but he was going to be right. Now that I was making money he insisted on teaching me how was I going to use and budget the money. Health insurance was a priority on his list. My father informed me that was not going to be covered on his plan anymore. Once I found out how much they paid I was certain that it was not something I wanted to pay. Life was to short and I had bigger and better things to spend my money on, more important things. My employer's health insurance plan had sufficient coverage, claimed the expert (my dad). The plan covered all visits to the doctors, dentist and all prescriptions with a co payment of only $15.00. It also covered me from any illness and emergency hospital visits. That was under my $2500.00 deductible. This would conveniently be taken out of my pay check and dad really loved that.Health insurance was not really on my list of things to do. I needed spending money for my weekend trips with my friends, camping, biking, canoeing you know important stuff like that. So far dad never steered me wrong so I got the insurance. I had considered canceling it, none of my friends had it but I knew that would break his heart. I was young, strong and in great health what could possibly go wrong. One weekend on a canoe trip, as we were returning to the boat ramp I was bitten on the leg by a large, very venomous rattle snake. It was pretty scary for a while but I am alive to talk about it. What was as scary was my tab starting with a helicopter ride followed by ten days in intensive care and five days in recovery. About three different prescriptions I needed when I got a massive infection that added another 5 days of follow up visits. With the total cost of about $65,000.00 I would have been paying for it the rest of my life. Dad is alright by me. Article Tags: Health Insurance
