With special attention to textile work, Saskia Weishut-Snapper creates mixed media scenes somewhere between painting and quilting. Each work plays with abstracted space and realism, balancing flattened pieces of fabric with overlapping figures and scenes. Natural palettes hold together each piece, as fabric adds variety in the form of different textures that become their own objects in each scene. The mark making varies from artfully arranged blocks of rectangular fabric to carefully cut shapes and figures. The patchwork nature of Weishut-Snapper’s work gives each image balance, sneaking in glints of saturated color and shining thread among more muted hues. Lines of thread function to piece together each image, but also to segment areas, adding detail and clarity to each composition. From textile landscapes to fantasy buildings, the combination of thread, fabric, and paint in Weishut-Snapper’s work builds whimsical explorations of the artist’s creative impulses.A Dutch artist, Saskia Weishut-Snapper grew up and pursued an education in Bergen, a village in the North of Holland famous for its art colony, of which her parents were active. Weishut-Snapper turned to textile arts in 1970. She explores rhythm and ambience in her work, as well as subjects related to her Jewish background. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.
