The delightful and oftentimes whimsical art of Swedish artist Josefina Wendel Carlsson draws on ancient symbology and inspiration from fairytales and Norse mythology to create something entirely unique and utterly beautiful. Working both in oil on canvas and watercolor on paper, Wendel Carlsson blends rich colors and hues with surreal imagery to create images fascinating in their scope and imaginative qualities. Wendel Carlsson seeks to capture profound joy with her paintings, demonstrating to the viewer all the wonder there is to discover in the world. Archetypal images like the moon, dragons, and flowers take on a dreamy quality that’s also magical—a visual feast for the eyes. At the same time, there’s a freedom in her art, a sense of the carefree and unexpected that permeates the work. As Wendel Carlsson explains, “I am a free spirit with the goal to create what I want and love. And the joy I feel when I paint is the feeling that I hope I can mediate to the observer of my art.”Josefina Wendel Carlsson currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. The show puts Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink next to Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. There are fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. Side by side, the pieces challenge us to figure out what they have in common as much as they ask us how they are different. When artwork of this kind of range is presented altogether, an image of the state of contemporary art begins to emerge. Unbound Perspectives is essential viewing for anyone looking for a true survey of contemporary art that is far-reaching yet discerning.
