The multi-talented photographer Anna Des approaches her art as a path, a journey to find both answers and questions. She aims not to capture moments, but to expand her understanding and surpass her inner limitations. Although one may not at first glance think of Des's work as surreal, it does share some important similarities with the style: Des says she wants her photographs to release her from the boundaries of "reality," and she describes the first photographs as examples of "how art can be born of bizarre encounters." Des's photographs frequently have the appearance of capturing an aura, or the spiritual essence of an object or place. From dark streets to lonely piers and empty stairways, her images can often be described as mysterious and uncanny, leading the viewer to follow the artist on the trail of her unanswerable inquiries.Born in Paris, Des is not only a photographer, but a painter, musician, sculptor, and poet. She received training from the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Sète. Five painters, two mixed-media artists, and one photographer offer work that challenge the traditional understanding of art as a purely visual medium. No fewer than four abstract artists are featured; they share a skillful use of bold colors and large-scale shapes but each differs in the emotional appeal to viewers. These painters show us the different ways color can shoot straight past the eyes to raise hairs on the skin and cause tingles beneath it. The exhibition's representational works also aim to make the viewer experience rather than look. One artist puts realistic figures against backgrounds of bubbling, exquisite clouds of reds and blues that communicate speed and movement. Another offers sharply contrasted, multicolor portraits that convey the presence of another person. The exhibition's photography show us the world from a human's eye point of view, with no more context and no more clarity than a person walking through would possess.
