Some forms of parent involvement with the school such as communications with school, volunteering, attending school events and parent--parent connections appeared to have little effect on student achievement, especially in high school. The idea of entrance exam is not limited to a narrow bandwidth of IIT-JEE or CAT as now-a-days students are most obsessed with them. The concept of conducting entrance exam in India dates back to 1857 when The University of Calcutta introduced the concept to decide the eligible candidates for studying at the university. This exam soon came to be called the school leaving examination. Subsequently it was renamed as Matriculation. After independence, the system was revised and class X exam was renamed to Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and class XII exam was called Higher Secondary Examination. The main essence in conducting entrance exam was to filter students and select among the best candidates hence offering them education in one of the most premier institutes and thereby enhancing research and quality of education in the country. But the scene soon changed as primary education was sidelined to give more importance to entrance exam, be it getting admitted in the premier engineering IITs, or the IIMs, medical institutions through AIPMT or other institutions. Academic examinations have become just a means of scoring passing marks to qualify for entrance exam but in entrance exam there is no concept of pass or fail.Entrance exam today are based on multiple choice objective questions unlike the subjective long question answer paper format based on the rationale that conventional subjective exams are subject to examiner bias and human errors. The highly competitive entrance exam cannot compromise on such errors since each mark may affect a candidates selection in the university or institution. Most of the entrance exams are based on OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) evaluation scheme like the IIT-JEE, AIPMT, AIEEE etc or online exams like the BITSAT or CAT which host a vast question bank and each candidate gets a different combination of questions. This gives them option to attend exam over a range of days but also leads to a slight variation in difficulty level although completely random selection of questions from the bank ensures that this rarely is the case. There is also a host of abroad entrance exam like the GRE for graduate level or the SAT for undergraduates to study in the United States.Entrance exam coaching these days have turned very professional requiring rigorous training and competition. Cities like Kota have become hubs for IIT-JEE coaching where they train candidates for more than 2 years completely sidelining the meaning of education. Focus is on cracking entrance exam rather than gaining knowledge turning the could-be-future-geniuses of our country into question solving machines rather than problem tackling minds. This habit seems so hard to give up that once candidates are at their graduate level in university, they seem to not being able to cope up with subjective answering format and innovative out of the box thinking. This issue raises concerns regarding the quality of education in our country. Also the issue of reservation for backward castes raises alarming concerns by denying a better deserving candidate his position in the university.
