Some forms of parent involvement with the school such as communications with school, volunteering, attending school events and parent--parent connections appeared to have little effect on student achievement, especially in high school. It has been said by many that thechildren are the future. In each child lies a potential that is rarely reached. Some may come close, while others remain dormant their entire lives. What is itthat determines the difference between an intellectual giant, and a mediocremind? Genetics? Wealth? Teachers? One woman recognized that the environment inwhich a child is placed has an enormous effect on the way children learn, thehunger for knowledge instilled, and the drive to learn developed. Ascientifically engineered environment can be the key to unleashing thepotential within a child. This womans name was Maria Montessori. In the history of education, MariaMontessori will hold a place as a visionary woman that saw much further thanher peers. Maria Montessori was born in Italy and early in life showed greatintelligence, studying engineering at an all boys school. She later attendedthe University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and upon graduation becameItalys first woman physician. After being appointed by the ItalianMinister of Education to direct the Scuola Ortofrenica, and having much successthere she was asked to direct a school in a poor housing project in Rome. Thisschool was opened on January 6, 1907 and was called Casa dei Bambini orChildrens House. It was here that the Montessori method of education was born.At the heart of the Montessori methodis teaching children to learn on their own, at their own pace, guided bytrained teachers. This is was what Maria called spontaneous self-developmentand is what she strove to teach in the Casa dei Bambini. The results wereastounding and word of her success spread throughout the world, opening the wayfor her to travel the globe promoting her ideas. Dr. Montessori first visited theUnited States in 1913 where she had strong support from prominent Americanssuch as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Helen Keller. In 1915 shereturned to speak at Carnegie Hall and set up a glass walled class room in SanFrancisco where students were taught by the Montessori method for four months, while spectators could observe. Over the next several years she movedfrom Italy to Spain and from Spain to the Netherlands and then eventually toIndia where she and her son Mario were detained during World War II. All thewhile Dr. Montessori continued developing the theory that would revolutionizeeducation. She lectured, taught, and was an example to all of devotion tolearning and the childs potential. She was even nominated for the Nobel peaceprize. Three times. She left behind a great legacy. Nowthere are thousands of private schools devoted to teaching in the Montessorimethods where children are able to dig deeper within themselves to reveal thepotential that she always saw within them.
