programming language.  The coding syntax is pretty close to C++, C# or Java (in 2012 X++ supports events).  However keep in mind that MorphX and X++ are serving Axapta architecture and they are indivisible from its Metadata: Tables, Forms, Queries, Reports.  Three tiers Corporate ERP architecture also has its specific, as developer should have the way to direct code execution on AOS (Application Server) or directly on end client Windows workstation.  All these statements should cool down brave C# and VB developer heads.  MorphX and X++ were abstracting former Axapta from database launch major modification – then we would recommend you to be conservative and consider traditional tools, such as MorphX3. Custom Programming versus Creating New Tables, Queries and Forms in Metadata.  One of the key messages on Convergence 2011, where version 2012 was demonstrated was the recommendation to create custom objects and forms without single line of programming.  Custom objects could be created in MorphX Metadata not only for Windows application, but also for Enterprise Portal (web based interface).  The presenter also demoed how newly created custom objects could be wrapped and distributed as web services without coding.  We know that large percentage of modifications is presented by the need to create custom tables – and we believe this is a good opportunity.  We were shown how web service could be called from Microsoft Excel.  However we also would like to stress that it is a good way to open AX for Linux world, Unix and custom Oracle database.  SOAP protocol and XML web service are computer platform neutral, as they are based on the structured text stream.  We were impressed with the innovations, however we still believe that large strata of custom projects require some X++ animation4. Internationalization.  Axapta was initially targeted to international Corporate ERP market, when it was architected in Denmark back in late 1990th.  It supports such international tricks as Unicode (languages based in hieroglyphs for example).  It is important to mention that Microsoft Business Solutions is making substantial efforts in keeping AX as localized Corporate ERP offer in the majority of World regions, including Brazil, China, Russia, UK, Europe, USA and Canada, Arabic Countries.  Such advantages as Process Manufacturing (good choice in food processing, mining, oil and gas drilling), Distribution and Supply Chain Management, plus Fund Management support in GL in version 2012 (opening this application for non-for-profit organizations).  By its initial plan, Axapta was very strong in such international business areas as multicurrency, support to the gamut of Sales, VAT, GST taxes variations.  If you are working for multinational company and you are programming AX – be sure that you understand label concept.  The text, which could be potentially translated to the foreign language should be implemented as Label5. ERP Brand Name Competition.  Let’s talk about Microsoft Dynamics ERP family first.  Here in the United States such flagman as Dynamics GP or formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics has larger number of active and passive (no longer used in production) installations.  GP is a good choice especially when you are in generic AP/AR/GL business model.  GP also has pretty advanced Distribution suite of modules.  However Great Plains is somewhat restricted if you are expanding internationally.  It doesn’t support Unicode, is not localized in Russia, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea.  It has presence in Spanish Central and South America, English speaking countries, Arabic World.  In our opinion Great Plains is also strong in Integration Tools, such as Integration Manager, where you can handle pretty complex data import and ongoing migration scenarios without coding or even doing even driven programming in VBA.  Dynamics NAV or former Navision – former Navision Software was acquired by Microsoft in earlier 2000th.  In time Navision was making market penetration steps into USA, and it held large market share in Europe.  NAV currently is offering more versions localized internationally, comparing to GP, but the number of countries is definitely fewer, comparing to AX.  SAP Business One or internationalized offer from SAP Corporate ERP giant.  SB1 is localized worldwide (with exception to Arabic countries).  This application is dedicated to lower mid-market and small businesses, where we do not see such features as batch posting.  However Israel originated accounting, small business ERP and MRP application is very smart, flexible and robust.  It might be recommended for small international office, where consolidated financial reporting could be done by exporting SBO GL trial balance into Excel and then integrated in FRx or Microsoft Management Reporter6. Competition on local markets.  Let’s begin with Russian Federation.  Here we see strong market share taken by locally developed 1S Bukhgalteria (in Russia we use German accounting terminology, to translate it into English it would sound like 1C Accounting).  This Accounting system might be considered as having advantages in connection to RF tax authorities and supporting Russian government controlled GL Accounts code.  Let’s not move to Brazil, where we would like to mention Microsiga.
