Overview: The Rhino Tuff OD-4800 isdefinitely something to be excited about. It is the onlyinterchangeable die modular binding punch that is available on themarket. This machine allows you to switch between multipledifferent punching patterns just like the larger Rhino electric modularpunches. However, it comes at a fraction of the cost because it is amanual punch. The OD4800 was designed for small organizationsthat want to punch multiple hole patterns but either don't have thebudget or don't produce the volume of binding needed to justifypurchasing a large modular electric binding punch. However, the Rhino Tuff OD-4800 is built with the same heavy duty metalconstruction as their other ultra heavy duty interchangeable diemodular binding punches. Strengths / Features: Thebiggest strength of the OD-4800 is its cost. This is the cheapestsolution on the market for an organization that need to bind documentswith multiple hole-patterns. With a retail cost of around eight hundredand fifty dollars including one die, this machine is about half thecost of the cheapest electric punch on the market.TheOD-4800 uses the same dies as the OD4000 electric binding punch. Thismeans that there are twelve standard hole patterns that can be usedwith this machine. You can choose from hole patterns for spiral coilbinding, plastic combs, double loop wire, Velobind and 3-hole punching.Plus, a number of custom dies are also available for this machine ifyou need to produce another hole pattern.Like the otherRhino Tuff modular punches, you can bolt your finishing equipment tothe side or top of this machine. It is designed to allow you to attacha coil inserter, wire closer or plastic comb opener to the top or sideof the machine (depending on the device you are attaching). This canhelp you to save space while allowing you to create your own custombinding system. The OD4800 is built with the same highquality components as the other machines in the Rhin-O-Tuff line ofbinding punches. It has a high quality metal case and heavy duty metalcomponents that help to ensure that this machine will remain strong andfunctional for many years to come. Weaknesses / Limitations: Althoughthe idea of an interchangeable die manual punch is a great idea itwould have been nice to see a better punching capacity. The OD-4800 israted to punch up to twelve sheets of paper at a time. This capacity issmaller than the capacity offered by most standalone manual bindingmachines. This smaller punching capacity will reduce the productivityof this machine especially for organizations that need to bind largersized documents. This machine comes with one die set but doesnot come with any finishing equipment. If you need to punch two holepatterns you will need to purchase another die set and a two pieces offinishing equipment. Even if you are a good shopper you will mostlikely spend as much on the accessories for this machine as you will onthe machine itself. This is something to keep in mind when you arebudgeting for a system such as this.Although it seems like agreat idea to attach a piece of finishing equipment to the top of thepunch, it requires a special kit that must be purchased separately.Plus, the process of attaching the finishing device to the top of yourmachine can be a little tricky and takes a while. The diechange mechanism on the OD4800 uses two bolts to hold the die in place. You have to loosen these two bolts and then slide the die out of theside of the punch. The process should only take about two minutes. However, it is important that you get the two bolts tight. If they arenot tight the die may move slightly during the punching process causingundue wear on your machine and reducing the accuracy of your punch. Recommendation: TheRhino Tuff OD-4800 is the only interchangeable die modular bindingpunch that is available on the market and it is a good choice for smallorganizations that need to produce multiple different hole patterns.Whenthis machine was released it was the only punch available on the marketthat could produce two hole patterns for binding. However, in the pastyear Akiles released their DuoMac series of binding punches. Theseallow you to pick two hole patterns of your choice and come with a wirecloser and a comb opener (if necessary). These machines also offer amuch better punching capacity than the OD4800. Organizations that justneed to produce two hole patterns might want to consider the AkilesDuomac series of punches. However, organizations such assmall print shops or copy shops who want to produce more than two holepatterns may still want to consider the OD-4800. Just be sure to budgetfor the modular finishing equipment and extra die sets when you areconsidering your purchase.
