A very long time ago, Ruler of China, the Jade Emperor, decided to make a change in the Zodiac cycle so that people would find it easy to track the time. He sent a communication to practically all the animals wanting them to show up together so that he could assign a year to each of them. The friendship of cats and rats are considered legendary. Upon having the information they decided to travel together to comply with the Emperor. It is known that cats are normally sleepyheads. They were just the same centuries ago as well. So in the morning when it was time to go, the Cat was still sleeping and the clever Rat ignoring all their plans from yesterday decided to leave quietly and alone. He eventually left his sleeping partner behind and was the first to reach in the Emperor's palace. Later on when the cat woke up he found the rat has already left. After this incident the Cats could never ever be Rats' friends. There are many versions of the folk story. Another fascinating edition tells that Emperor Jade invited animals to a conference. He made an announcement to name the calendar years after the animals and according to their order of arrival. The site for the gathering was across the river. Rat and Cat were not the best of the swimmers but they were clever, the Rat being cleverer of the two. Together they decided to ask the Ox for help with traversing the river. Ox was kind and strong. He accepted help. When they crossed half way in the river the rat cunningly pushed the cat into the river and rushed to the Emperor to become the first animal in the zodiac calendar. Ox was not way behind and was accorded the second place immediately. Ox was followed by the Tiger. Tiger showed up huffing and puffing. He said it was no easy feat to cross the strong currents of the river but he managed to do so due to his physical prowess. He earned the honor for being the third animal to have a position in the calendar. Immediately after the tiger the rabbit hopped into the palace. He had managed to cross the river by lunging from one rock to a new one and then got a support of a log that assisted him get to the bank without risk. He was awarded the fourth place in the calendar. The powerful Dragon was the other to show up on the scene. The Emperor asked the dragon about his late arrival. The Dragon explained that he was delayed as he was busy making rain for mankind and moreover he saw a smaller Rabbit attempting to get to the bank, so he decided to help him. He puffed the air so that the rabbit which was holding the log could reach the river bank. These were sufficient reasons for the Emperor and he happily specified the fifth spot to the Dragon. After a little while the galloping sounds of the horse were heard and he arrived on the spot. As soon as he arrived he experienced that a Snake had been hiding under its hoof, which frightened him. The snake with this coincidence claimed the sixth place in the calendar. Horse had to decide to the seventh place. When emperor decided to leave he saw the goat, monkey and the rooster arriving. They were friends and had assisted each other to traverse the river. The rooster got a raft and the other two rowed it in the river current. Their endeavours bore fruit and they were able to have eighth, ninth and tenth positions respectively. Next to secure the eleventh spot was the Dog. He had spent quite a bit of precious time playing in the river so he was delayed in spite of his proficiency as a swimmer. Only remaining spot was taken by the Pig, which stopped to eat and then fell asleep. But beneficial to him as he was late and still found the only kept spot in the calendar. The cat was the last animal to arrive at the spot and since all the places have been alloted he could not find a place in the calendar. Another significant twist is incorporated to the folk story in the variant which tells that the Rat believed that the Ox was powerful and perhaps its best choice for crossing the river. He cunningly persuaded him to take him across the river. He questioned the Ox if it would be pleased in listening to a song. The Ox with its born simplicity gave the consent. Reacting the rat moved his lip area but uttered no sound. The Ox said he could not hear it, to which the Rat responded by saying that he would be able to hear him if he was closer to his ear. The Ox still not knowing Rat's true intention permitted him to ride his back. Before he realized they had crossed the river and the Rat jumped off his back and ran to claim the first spot for himself. The Ox followed and the other animals came in subsequently. There is another version to the folk story found in Buddhism. According to them, before leaving the Earth, Buddha invited all animals to meet him. Only twelve came and in order to recognise their loyalty, Buddha assigned them each one year in the order they had arrived to meet him. Last but not the least is a variation that says that the God had requested animals to a party. The ever clever Rat loved to make a fool of the Cat. He informed the Cat that the dinner party was not that night but the night after. He went away to the banquet leaving the sleeping cat and secured the first place and the cat had none. This actually angered the Cat and he could never ever be Rat's friend once again. The existing version of the Zodiac calendar has been in the making for hundreds of years. It`s real beginning is not possible to find. Historians typically agree that the reason for the absence of the Cat in the calendar is simply because Cat was only launched into China later on by the Buddhists, who had brought it with them from India.
