When starting a new work at home business it is very easy to become consumed by it. We spend so much time trying to get the business up and running that we may end up becoming burned out and lose our motivation. Forthose of us who have kids or know children, it certainly seems liketoys and the idea of play has changed. Childrens entertainment hastaken on a much more passive role, when in our day play was all aboutimagination and creativity. For example, wed play dress up or variousrole playing games, and wed use the toys we did have in completelycreative, loosely structured fun. Nowadays it seems that traditionalplay where you create a story has been left behind, what with videogames and other passive entertainments.Ofcourse, I dont mean to sound like an old fogey by belittling a newgeneration of toys, but its hard to disagree with the importance ofactive play for a childs development. In fact, classic toys and gamesare still very much the basis for learning and growing. They can havethe occasional video game, but make sure to also include, especiallywhen they are very young, these classic toys for development. Remember, playing is as important as outright learning, such as learning a newlanguage and engaging in sports, and can really help our children excel.Below I will explain why play is so important for development. 1.Play can be a precursor to important socialization skills that childrenlearn through sports. Here they learn how to be part of a team, bedisciplined, and learn about competitiveness. Leading an active lifebefore they are old enough to play organized sports can begin thisprocess. These basic activities include things such as running outside, playing hide and seek, or playing hopscotch. Healthy bodies help createhealthy minds, so we should never underestimate the power of physicalactivity, even if it does just look like play.2.Play is also very important when it comes to the development ofcreativity. The ability to create their own universe is important forchildren. For example, children can be the teacher instead of thestudent. They can research a tropical jungle while surrounded bystuffed lions and stuffed tigers. Or they can be Snow White with allher enchanted forest animals (plush toys of course) waiting for PrinceCharming. With the creativity to impersonate and create their ownscenarios, children can explore future interests or even futurecareers. Creating their own characters and stories is a great way togrow their imaginations in way that is better than just watchingtelevision or playing a video game where the stories, pictures, andcharacters are already there. Also, many of these imaginative games aremuch less violent then television or video games, so the child can growand develop in a way thats much more harmonious.3. Playalso develops social skills and teaches a child how to relate toothers. For example, maybe the child is pretending theyre in a junglewith a stuffed tiger. Not only does this help them learn about nature,it also teaches them how to interact with others. Children who playtogether, whether they are jumping rope or having fun with that stuffedtiger have to set ground rules and boundaries as they pretend in orderto share a world. In this way, children learn how to depend on andinteract with each other.Remember, playing is very vital to the development of a child. Play teaches themhow to cope with the world, learn how to interact with others and bemore creative. The occasional video game is fine, but we should makesure children learn the basics of play. And we can help do this byjoining in the fun. Whether we decide to play the damsel in distress orthe monster thats chasing them around, we can be a part of the playand development. Remember, these memories will be cherished far morethan any television show or video game.
