Question 2
A research team wanted to examine the phenomenon of workplace bullying in contemporary organizations. For this purpose, they recruited four large organizations (two organizations from the automotive sector and two from the textile sector). Top management of each firm advertised the research via formal email sent to all employees asking for their participation in the research.
The research team conducted three focus groups in each organization; participants were selected from employees who volunteered to participate in the research. Each focus group consisted of 7 employees all of which working in the same department and lasted 1.5 hours. The focus group discussions were conducted in a spacious room that top management of each firm has designated for the research’ purposes. Care was taken that each group contained both male and female employees while the various departmental hierarchy levels were represented within each focus group. A group of three young male academics acted as moderators for all focus groups. Focus group discussions focused on asking participants to recall and refer to particular bullying incidents which might have experienced in the particular work organization.
Discuss how useful the particular research design used is for drawing general conclusions about workplace bullying in contemporary firms. [11 marks]
What limitations can you see in the representativeness of this piece of research in terms of businesses recruited and people interviewed? [11 marks]
